Hấp cách thuỷ 15 phút rồi để nguội cho tàu hủ dính và dai hơn. Bắt nồi lên bếp, cho dầu vào và cho ngay 1 muỗng canh đường vào, đảo đều tay, để lửa nhỏ. Khi đường trở màu cánh gián thì cho gốc hành vào phi thơm. Sau đó tắt bếp để nguội. Cho vào 500ml nước dừa, bật bếp lại và khuấy đều đến khi đường tan đều. Nêm vào 2 muỗng cafe hạt nêm, 1/2 muỗng canh đường và 1 muỗng cafe nước mắm chay.
Sau khi nêm vừa khẩu vị, cho tàu hủ đã hấp chín vào nấu đến khi tàu hủ thấm đều gia vị và có màu vàng cánh gián đẹp mắt thì tắt bếp. Cho vào thêm 1 ít hành lá và tiêu xay.
